[Saba Sports News] Japanese badminton star Watanabe Yuta, who partnered with Higashino Arisa and won bronze medals in mixed doubles at two consecutive Olympic Games, also claimed the gold at the All England Open. Together, they set numerous records in Japanese badminton history. However, they suddenly announced their breakup last year. Recently, Watanabe revealed the reasons for this split in an interview. It was not due to rumors about relationship issues but because continuing as a duo no longer allowed them to achieve greater progress or win an Olympic gold. Discussions about splitting up began as early as before the 2024 Paris Olympics, with formal talks occurring in May last year. Yet, both felt that Paris might be their final Olympics together. Their long-term partnership made them mature, but looking toward the next four-year cycle, they felt their growth potential had nearly plateaued. They could still improve, but aiming for the 2024 Paris Olympics gave them the motivation to reach new heights in their careers. Unfortunately, they failed to break through in Paris and again won bronze in mixed doubles. Ultimately, the Japan Open Badminton Championships in August 2024 marked the end of their partnership.
