[Saba Sports News] Cricket West Indies (CWI) have made a groundbreaking move by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) to ensure equal pay for all players regardless of gender. This progressive step, following the lead of cricketing nations like India, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia, signals a significant shift towards gender equality in Caribbean cricket.
CWI and WIPA set a commendable goal of achieving gender equality in international and regional match fees, captain’s allowances, and team and individual prize money for Caribbean cricketers by the cutoff date of 1st October 2027.
Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of CWI, expressed the historic significance of this move, emphasizing the commitment to gender equality and recognizing the invaluable contributions of female players to West Indies cricket.
“This is a historic day for West Indies cricket. As we overhaul the compensation structures and align performance grading, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and progressive cricket framework. This step reflects our unwavering commitment to gender equality and acknowledges the immense contributions of female players to West Indies cricket,” Kishore said as quoted to the International Cricket Council.
Highlighting their dedication, Kishore noted that the initiative builds upon measures taken in the previous year, extending equal privileges to the West Indies senior women’s cricket team, such as business-class travel and single-room accommodations during international assignments.
“In the preceding year, we undertook substantial enhancements to our travel policy, mandating that the West Indies Senior Women’s team travel business class on all extended international flights and are accommodated in single rooms during international assignments. This aligns seamlessly with the established policy for West Indies Senior Men’s tours. Today, with the signing of this MOU, we take another significant stride in narrowing the gender gap within our cricketing community,” he added.
Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI, underscored the impact of the MoU on women’s cricket, stating that the increased rewards for female players reflect a commitment to fairness, excellence, and a strategic emphasis on winning, thus marking a significant step towards gender pay equity.
“We are proud to embark on this journey towards gender pay equity. The significant increases for our female players demonstrate our dedication to rewarding excellence and promoting fairness in our cricketing community. The increases in prize money, greater rewards for our best-performing players, and higher match fees for players in the starting XIs are all strategic moves to place a greater emphasis on winning,” Grave stated.
