[Saba Sports News] India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, currently showcasing his skills in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Kerala, shared insights into the unwavering support he receives from captain Rohit Sharma.
Despite being overlooked for significant tournaments like the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023, Samson appreciated the encouragement from Rohit.
In a recent interview on Dhanya Varma’s YouTube channel, the 29-year-old recounted Rohit’s lighthearted banter, where the skipper humorously remarked on Samson’s penchant for smashing sixes, particularly against his IPL team, Mumbai Indians.
“Rohit Sharma was the first or second person who came to me and talked. He told me, ‘Hey Sanju, wassup. You performed well in the IPL but hit too many sixes against the Mumbai Indians. You bat really well’. I had great support from him,” said Samson as quoted.
Acknowledging the challenges and setbacks, Samson addressed the perception of being considered the “unluckiest” cricketer by some fans. Despite the hurdles, he expressed gratitude for surpassing his own expectations and reaching his current position.
“People call me the unlikeliest cricketer, but where I’ve reached currently, it’s much more than what I thought I could,” he added.
Samson has donned the Indian jersey in 13 ODIs and 24 T20Is. In ODIs, Samson boasts an impressive record, accumulating 390 runs with an average of 55.71 and a strike-rate of 104. In the T20 format, he has amassed 374 runs with an average of 19.68 and a strike-rate of 133.57.
