[Saba Sports News] Jason Kidd took a creative approach in the game against the New Orleans Pelicans that ultimately paid off for his team. With the Dallas Mavericks holding a slender 121-119 lead in the last 20 seconds, head coach Kidd boldly chose to intentionally foul Zion Williamson right after a Pelicans inbounds. This unconventional strategy for a team ahead by two points succeeded as Williamson made only one of his two free throws. The Mavericks clinched the game with a 125-120 victory, as the Pelicans failed to score further.
Post-game, Kidd justified his tactic to the media, stating his intention was to play the odds and foul Williamson before he could attempt a basket, according to Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com. This strategy, while ensuring that the Mavericks couldn’t lose in regulation (assuming a rebound on a missed free throw), was also backed by Williamson’s scoring prowess of 29 points and his 66.4 percent season average from the free-throw line.
Typically, coaches rely on their defense to avoid extending the game into overtime, especially when a single defensive stop could secure the win. However, Kidd’s gamble not only worked flawlessly but also wasn’t the most unconventional strategy he’s employed for a tactical advantage.
