South Africa’s skipper for their two-Test tour to New
Zealand, which begins on February 4 and includes a match against the SA20, is
none other than uncapped opening batsman Neil Brand. Only three players from
the current series against India are included in South Africa’s improvised
squad that will be travelling: Zubayr Hamza, who was brought in as a
replacement for Temba Bavuma due to a hamstring injury, David Bedingham, and
Keegan Petersen. For the World Test Championship (WTC) series, none of the first-choice
bowling attack players are available.
The SA20, which starts on January 10, will keep most
of the team that is presently participating in the India series unavailable.
This eliminated the following players: Nandre Burger, Marco Jansen, Aiden
Markram, Temba Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Gerald Coetzee, Kagiso
Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Keshav Maharaj. Although Dean Elgar will not play in
the Twenty20 competition, he will be retiring from Test cricket in the New
Year.
The last-minute derailment of red-ball coach Shukri
Conrad’s plans came on Thursday morning with the signing of Tony de Zorzi by
Durban’s Super Giants. De Zorzi was supposed to open the batting for South
Africa in New Zealand. There are seven uncapped players for every seven capped
players in South Africa. The most experienced player is Duanne Olivier, a
seamer who participated in 15 Tests between 2017 and 2022, followed by Petersen
(12).
On Boxing Day, South Africa opened their 2023–25 World
T20 campaign with a victory over India by an innings and 32 runs. Throughout
the season, they will only play two Test series: one at home against India, Sri
Lanka, and Pakistan, and one away at Bangladesh, the West Indies, and New
Zealand. Conrad now has to strive to win games without his best players after
CSA failed in its attempt to relocate the New Zealand series so that a stronger
group could be selected. On the other hand, Conrad had previously stated that
he “backs himself to come back with something” from a trip where he
could hand on as many as seven debuts. South Africa has never lost a Test
series versus New Zealand.
South Africa will travel with their usual support
staff, none of whom are involved in the SA20, apart from batting consultant
Ashwell Prince, who joined them for the India Tests. Prince is commentating on
the SA20 and Imraan Khan, former Test batter and current Dolphins coach, will
go to New Zealand in that role for this series.
