[Saba Sports News] Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar showered words of praise on KL Rahul, who was India’s saviour in the first innings of the ongoing Test match against South Africa.
South Africa won the toss and asked India to bat on a challenging pitch at the SuperSport Park, Centurion. India were 92/4 when Rahul came out to bat.
Soon after, the score read 121/6 as South Africa continued to rule the roost. However, Rahul stood in their way, being India’s only batter to record a half-century in the innings.
The 31-year-old first formed a 43-run stand for the seventh wicket with Shardul Thakur. He then took it upon himself to score the runs while batting with tailenders, helping India go beyond 200 runs before rain brought an early end to the day’s play.
Rahul remained unbeaten on 70 runs, and according to Gavaskar, his knock is no less than a hundred.
“This half century by KL Rahul is worth a century. On this pitch, under pressure, this innings is equal to a century,” Gavaskar said as quoted on Star Sports.
India will head to the second day with a score 208/8. Rahul, who is batting undefeated, would aim to add to this total and score his century in the process.
