[Saba Sports News] The Golden State Warriors made a significant promise to Klay Thompson after news broke of his move to a Western Conference rival.
On Monday, Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his 13-year tenure with the Warriors.
A few hours after the signing was announced, the Warriors released a statement honoring Thompson’s accomplishments with the team. The statement commended the 34-year-old for his accolades and revealed that the Warriors plan to retire his No. 11 jersey once he retires.
“Klay’s legacy will live on forever, and we look forward to retiring his #11 jersey at Chase Center, joining other Warriors immortals, including those who helped shape this recent dynasty — himself included,” the post read.
Thompson built a Hall of Fame-worthy resume with the Warriors, earning five All-Star nods, two All-NBA selections, and three championship rings in his first seven seasons. He helped Golden State win another title in 2022. However, after missing two years due to leg injuries, his performance has declined, averaging 17.9 points per game last season and shooting below 40% from three-point range for the first time in his career.
