[Saba Sports News] Miami Heat GM Andy Elisburg discussed Jimmy Butler’s contract on Sirius XM’s NBA Radio, stating both parties are interested in an extension. However, Butler must meet some of Pat Riley’s challenges to secure the deal, which may be unfamiliar territory for him.
“As Pat Riley said, it’s not something we need to rush. We have all year, and if needed, he can become a free agent next year, and we can discuss a contract then. If a player wants to be in Miami, and we want him in Miami, the rest is logistics,” Elisburg said. “Pat has always approached it this way. Whether it’s cap room or timing, that’s just part of it. Jimmy has indicated he wants to be in Miami, and we want him here too. Pat has set challenges he wants met.”
“Jimmy isn’t used to being challenged, but both he and Pat are strong-willed and focused on winning. Ultimately, it will work out if both the player and team want to continue together. If they do, there are many ways to make the numbers work. The most important thing is everyone wanting to make the deal.”
These comments follow Pat Riley’s public criticism of Butler, where Riley urged Butler to focus on getting healthy instead of making bold claims about reaching the NBA Finals.
