[Saba Sports News] According to recent reports from Japanese media, current head coach of the Japanese badminton national team Park Joo-bong will officially leave his position in January next year, ending a 20-year coaching career. Park began coaching the Japanese team in 2004 and has led significant changes in the team, including guiding them to win women’s doubles gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Japanese badminton team has faced severe challenges due to financial issues; in 2022, a major corruption scandal forced the resignation of top officials in the Japan Badminton Association (JBA), leading to a restructuring election. Now, with JBA facing a financial deficit of 300 million yen for two consecutive years, adjustments will be made to the team and management after the Paris Olympics, reducing the competition roster. The editor believes that Park’s departure undoubtedly casts a heavy shadow over the future of Japanese badminton. Under Park’s guidance, Japan has achieved numerous successes in international competitions; now, with his resignation, the team faces many challenges in transitioning between generations, as young players have not developed as expected, leaving the future direction of Japanese badminton uncertain.
