In Test cricket, Shubman Gill has amassed 1040 runs.
More over half of them have arrived within limits.
Now, there’s nothing at all wrong with it. The side he
will face in the coming months has embraced a style of play that essentially
makes every ball an event. They have won 13 of the previous 18 Test matches,
including one thrilling series split against the Ashes last year.
Even yet, conventional hitting is known for its
ability to block good balls and punish bad ones. The latest No. 3 players from
India were quite good at that. Even though Gill’s career is still young, he
will be eager to match them. He is a better ball-striking raw player than
Cheteshwar Pujara or Rahul Dravid. Like a Ferrari, he is. He keeps wanting to
floor it, though. even when stuck in traffic.
Even though Gill was only removed in single figures
twice in his previous two Test series, which spanned seven innings each in the
West Indies and South Africa, he only managed to collect 119 runs at an average
of 19.83, with a high score of 36.
Since India’s most effective batsman in home Tests
over the past ten years is absent, it is even more critical that they discover
a new source of runs, something that doesn’t happen very often. The year was
2021; Kanpur. Bengaluru 2018. Dharamsala, too, in 2017. Before he had firmly
established himself in the side, he had to go through a few Tests. And that’s
it. Since making his debut, Virat Kohli has only missed five Test matches in
India. In those games, he averaged sixty runs when the top seven batters’
average was only thirty-five. India still has an advantage. One battalion has
been lost. The others must therefore take up the slack, which they are more
than capable of doing.
For instance, Gill plays shots that sound like they
belong in a dream. For instance, the half-drive, half-jab, high-elbow, and
back-foot strokes through midwicket. Such contempt is hardly warranted by balls
that end on top of off stump – or even slightly outside – at 139 km/h from
Mitchell Starc. With Gill, though, it appeared ordinary. He opposes geometry,
physics, and bowling. as long as he is at the fold.
There’s no reason why an aggressive No. 3 couldn’t be
equally difficult to ignore. Ricky Ponting was a rare combination of those two
qualities; at times, it was nearly hard to get him to make a mistake. Those who
managed to do so, such as Andrew Flintoff and Ishant Sharma, were instantly
hailed as cult heroes.
If Gill persists in foiling England’s plans A and B,
just think of the series India will have. If only by being a bit more cunning
he manages to move them towards C, D, and E, towards funky meadows and golden
arms. If he concentrated on creating innings rather than just making shots,
just think of the menace he would offer.
That Shubman Gill will also be impressive to see.
