[Saba Sports News] After trading for forward Dorian Finney-Smith earlier this week, Rob Pelinka and the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be back in action exploring further roster upgrades.
According to reports, the Lakers are actively seeking a center to back up Anthony Davis. The team has reportedly discussed four potential targets: Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz, Robert Williams III of the Portland Trail Blazers, Day’Ron Sharpe of the Brooklyn Nets, and Nick Richards of the Charlotte Hornets.
The Lakers have also been linked to Washington Wizards center Jonas Valančiūnas for months. However, Irwin notes that the Wizards are now shopping for a better offer, especially after the Lakers parted with D’Angelo Russell and other assets in the trade for Finney-Smith.
All four centers mentioned—Kessler, Williams, Sharpe, and Richards—are young shot-blockers playing on rebuilding teams.
Kessler, in particular, stands out as a 23-year-old seven-footer on a rookie contract, though Sharpe is also 23 and on a rookie deal, Richards brings size as another seven-footer, and Williams offers NBA Finals experience from his time with the Boston Celtics.
The 18-13 Lakers are thin at center behind Davis. Jaxson Hayes has been sidelined since November with an ankle injury, Jarred Vanderbilt has yet to play this season due to foot and knee issues, and Christian Koloko is working his way back from a blood clot absence.
With limited depth at the 5, the Lakers may also explore other frontcourt options as the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaches.
