[Saba Sports News] Jontay Porter allegedly sent messages to bettors during games he was playing, according to newly released court documents.
The former Toronto Raptors forward, banned from the NBA for life in 2024, is now the subject of a federal investigation into an illegal sports betting scheme. A court filing, alleges that Porter texted a co-conspirator during a Jan. 22, 2024, game against Memphis, providing insider information about his status.
One alleged message from Porter, who started that game, read, “I went back to locker room to get eye checked on. Idk if imma play much more.” Another stated, “I’m not starting second half. But if it’s garbage time I will shoot a million shots.”
Additional revelations implicate Shane Hennen, another individual arrested this week for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with the scheme.
Prosecutors allege that Hennen received a screenshot of Porter’s texts and subsequently wagered over $6,000 on Porter’s “under” prop bets for two games: Jan. 26, 2024, against the LA Clippers and March 20, 2024, against Sacramento.
Before the Jan. 26 game, Porter allegedly texted Hennen and another co-conspirator, “Hit unders for the big numbers. I told [Co-Conspirator 2] no blocks no steals. I’m going to play [the] first 2-3 minute stint off the bench then when I get subbed out tell them my eye [is] killing me again.”
Porter’s involvement in the scheme first came to light after the NBA flagged irregularities in betting patterns on his props.
He was banned from the league in April 2024, with further investigations uncovering that Porter not only provided confidential information but also placed bets himself—violating fundamental sports integrity rules.
Porter later admitted that his actions were driven by a significant gambling debt. He pled guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, a federal felony, last summer. Initially scheduled for sentencing in late 2024, his sentencing has been delayed to May 2025, with reports suggesting he could face significant prison time.
