[Saba Sports News] The 2025 Malaysia Badminton Open concluded last week. In men’s singles, Chinese player Shi Yuqi defeated Denmark’s Anders Antonsen with a score of 2-0 to win the championship. However, it is somewhat regrettable that after winning the title, Shi Yuqi only received 12,000 champion points, which is typical for Super 1000 level events. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has determined that if the prize money for a Super 1000 level event is $1.55 million or more, players can receive additional points. In such cases, the champion will see an increase in their original 12,000 points. For example, in the 2024 China Badminton Open, due to its record total prize money on the BWF tour, the men’s singles champion Weng Hongyang benefited from 13,500 points. According to reports, the total prize money for the 2025 Malaysia Badminton Open is set at $1.45 million, which is only $150,000 more than the basic total prize money of $1.3 million for Super 1000 events, thus not meeting the BWF’s policy for linking prize money and points. Fans have commented on this, saying that the BWF has many bizarre regulations.
