[Saba Sports News] A major update on Gregg Popovich surfaced Saturday, raising questions about his coaching future.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Popovich will not return to coach the San Antonio Spurs this season as he continues recovering from a stroke suffered in November. His long-term future with the team is also uncertain.
Popovich initially stepped away in early November due to health concerns, later revealed to be a mild stroke. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has since taken over as acting head coach.
The Spurs, currently 24-30, had been viewed as an ascending team after acquiring De’Aaron Fox to pair with Victor Wembanyama. However, the franchise suffered another major blow this week with the announcement that Wembanyama will miss the rest of the season due to a blood clot.
Popovich, 76, has been the Spurs’ head coach since 1996-97, making him the oldest coach in NBA history. He has led the team to five championships and holds the all-time record for most coaching wins (1,390).
With retirement speculation surrounding Popovich for years, this latest development could signal the end of his legendary run.
