[Saba Sports News] Dean Elgar, set to retire post the current Test series against India, is appointed as the captain for South Africa’s final match in the two-game series, replacing the injured Temba Bavuma. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed Bavuma’s absence after the conclusion of the first Test.
Bavuma’s injury occurred while fielding on the first day of the Test, leading to his withdrawal after scans confirmed a hamstring strain. Consequently, Elgar, who had already announced his retirement plans before the series, will lead the team in his final international match.
Elgar had temporarily taken over the captaincy during South Africa’s victory by an innings and 32 runs at SuperSport Park, after Bavuma’s early exit. His leadership, bolstered by a century, earned him the Player of the Match in the opening Test.
Zubayr Hamza will fill in for Bavuma in the squad for the concluding Test in Cape Town, starting January 3. Elgar is experienced in captaincy, having previously led the Proteas, including during India’s last Test series visit to South Africa. In 2021-22, after falling behind 1-0, Elgar spearheaded a 2-1 series comeback, showcasing his leadership and resilience.
