[Saba Sports News] After the conclusion of the F1 Miami Grand Prix, the biggest talking point in the paddock was not just Mercedes continuing to lead the pack, but Red Bull’s sudden introduction of a brand-new upgrade package for its RB22 car. Following Max Verstappen securing his best result of the season so far in Miami, McLaren has admitted it is studying Red Bull’s highly controversial new sidepod design.
With Formula 1 entering a brand-new technical era from the 2026 season, all teams are searching for their own aerodynamic solutions. Now that the ground-effect era is over, the new regulations place greater emphasis on upper-body airflow management and adjustable front and rear wing designs, resulting in vastly different car designs across the grid. Ferrari has rolled out a flipped rear wing, Mercedes has built its pace advantage on a unique front-wing concept, while Red Bull has placed its bet on sidepod architecture. In Miami, Red Bull introduced seven component upgrades at once, with the all-new sidepods drawing the most attention.
Compared to the more conventional layouts adopted by other teams, the RB22 features extremely dramatic newly added flow channels on top of its sidepods. The design aims to optimize airflow, boost downforce and improve cooling efficiency. It even drew crowds of technical staff from across the paddock to stop and observe in the pit lane. The upgrade delivered immediate results for Red Bull. Verstappen was only 0.16 seconds slower than pole-sitter Andrea Kimi Antonelli in qualifying. In the previous three races, his gap to the fastest lap had never been lower than 0.8 seconds.
In the editor’s opinion, the widespread paddock attention sparked by Red Bull’s new design essentially represents another display of the dynamic balance between innovation, imitation and regulatory constraints within Formula 1’s technical rules. It reflects the pragmatic strategy adopted by top-tier teams in pursuit of every millisecond of competitive advantage.
