[Saba Sports News] Fernando Alonso, current Formula 1 driver for Aston Martin, recently received good news when he was appointed as the image ambassador for the Barcelona circuit in Catalonia. He was selected for this role due to his significant ties with the track, having won there twice—once in 2006 and again in 2013. The 2013 victory marked his last win in Formula 1, carrying many fond memories for him and Spanish fans. His deep emotional connection with the track played an important role in his selection. Additionally, with the new street circuit in Madrid set to host the Spanish Grand Prix starting in 2026, the contract for Formula 1 races at the Catalunya track expires at the end of 2026, posing challenges for renewal. Alonso’s influence could play a positive role in retaining the track’s place in the F1 calendar. His addition brings hope for the circuit’s future. In my opinion, established tracks need to leverage star power to maintain their status. Alonso’s global influence will become a crucial bargaining chip in negotiations with F1 officials.
