[Saba Sports News] Following the recently concluded Premier League match where Burnley drew 1-1 with Chelsea, Burnley star Hannibal Mejbri updated his social media, posting screenshots of the extreme racial abuse he received. The screenshots showed accounts using highly toxic, racially charged slurs to insult him, with language that was vile and filled with prejudice and malice. Faced with such hurt, Hannibal helplessly captioned the post: “It’s 2026, and people are still doing this. Educate yourselves and your children.” After the incident came to light, various parties spoke out to condemn this vile behavior. Burnley FC promptly issued an official statement, clearly expressing strong condemnation of racism, emphasizing that society absolutely will not tolerate such actions that violate social order and good customs. The club further stressed its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination. Currently, the club has reported the involved accounts to the social media platform’s parent company and will collaborate with the Premier League and local police to fully investigate and hold those responsible accountable. The club also promised to provide Hannibal with comprehensive support, safeguarding the player’s legitimate rights and personal dignity.
The editor believes that the essence of football is effort and passion, unity and inclusion; it should not be tainted by racial prejudice. Hannibal gives his all on the field, fighting for the team’s honor, yet has to endure baseless malice and hurt after the match—this is clearly unfair.
