[Saba Sports News] Philadelphia 76ers forward Caleb Martin recently made headlines for a contract he didn’t sign.
Last week, Martin agreed to a 4-year, $32 million deal with the Sixers, the largest payday of his career. However, he reportedly turned down a significantly larger offer from the Miami Heat.
Speaking to reporters at the 76ers’ training facility in Camden, N.J., Martin, 28, addressed potentially leaving millions on the table.
“You always wish to make as much money as you can,” Martin said via Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “That’s part of the game and life. You live and learn, and you take risks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But I believe everything happens for a reason, and I feel like I’m here for a reason—one of those being a pathway to a championship.”
The 76ers appear to have a better shot at contending for a championship than the Heat. Besides Martin, the Sixers also signed 9-time All-Star Paul George.
With longtime starter Tobias Harris heading to Detroit, Martin could become a starter on a potential top-three team in the East, a role that transcends monetary value.
