[Saba Sports News] Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard is expected to miss extended time following a concerning medical diagnosis.
Lillard had already missed the Bucks’ last three games with what was initially believed to be a lingering calf injury. However, the issue has proven more serious than first thought.
On Tuesday, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that Lillard has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)—a blood clot in his right calf. As a result, the All-Star guard will be sidelined indefinitely.
According to reports, Lillard has begun treatment with blood thinners to help stabilize the clot.
The seven-time All-Star released a statement through Haynes, expressing gratitude for the Bucks’ medical team and support system:
“It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control would come up,” Lillard said.
“Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priorities are to protect my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, I need to be there for my kids and my family. I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this. They’ve been supportive and proactive throughout this process. I look forward to moving past this and continuing my career.”
In 58 games this season, Lillard is averaging 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists while shooting 44.8% from the field.
San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with a similar condition earlier this year, which prematurely ended his season. Like Lillard, Wembanyama is expected to make a full recovery ahead of next season.
