[Saba Sports News] De’Aaron Fox is putting an end to any potential controversy as he begins his tenure with the San Antonio Spurs.
According to Don Harris of WOAI-TV, Fox has decided to wear No. 4 with the Spurs, changing course from his initial choice of No. 2. The switch is a tribute to his wife, Recee, a former Texas Tech basketball player who wore No. 4 in college.
Fox, acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Sacramento Kings over the weekend, originally planned to wear No. 2—last worn by Kawhi Leonard in 2018.
The decision sparked debate due to Leonard’s contributions to the franchise, including his 2014 NBA Finals MVP run, as well as his controversial exit from San Antonio.
With his longtime No. 5 jersey currently occupied by Spurs rookie Stephon Castle, the 27-year-old Fox will now don No. 4, a number previously worn by Spurs players like Michael Finley, Danny Green, and Derrick White.
