[Saba Sports News] On January 28, the International Cricket Council (ICC) revoked the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket, effective immediately. The suspension, imposed on November 10, was due to a “serious breach” of the board’s obligations as an ICC member, specifically concerning the autonomous management of its affairs and preventing government interference in cricket’s governance in Sri Lanka.
This decision followed a comprehensive 112-page report by Sri Lanka’s auditor general, which accused the board of poor governance, corruption, and mismanagement of funds. Consequently, the Sri Lankan board, led by President Shammi Silva, was dismissed during the 2023 World Cup. Despite a temporary reinstatement following a court appeal, the board was soon removed again, only to later resume its duties.
During this turmoil, the ICC met on November 21 and decided to relocate the Under-19 World Cup 2024 from Sri Lanka to South Africa.
In a recent statement, the ICC confirmed their satisfaction with the remedial actions taken by Sri Lanka Cricket, affirming that the board was no longer in violation of its membership obligations.
