[Saba Sports News] The Indonesian badminton world recently received an unfortunate message as legendary badminton figure Hendra Kartanegara passed away in Jakarta at the age of 87. His death has left the Indonesian badminton community bereft of one of its legendary players. Seok Foong was an ethnic Chinese badminton legend who won the men’s singles title at the 1959 All England Championships, helped the Indonesian team win the Thomas Cup multiple times, and also claimed the gold medal in men’s singles at the 1962 Asian Games. After retiring, he actively engaged in social affairs. In October 2000, he co-signed a letter with other ethnic Chinese community representatives to then President Wahid, calling for the abolition of all discriminatory laws and policies against ethnic Chinese and their descendants from the previous regime, advocating for ethnic equality and social integration. His actions demonstrated his sense of social responsibility and commitment, fighting for the rights of Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese community and promoting fairness and progress in Indonesian society. The editor believes that Seok Foong’s life, whether in his dedication and sportsmanship in the badminton arena or in his commitment in social affairs, sets an example for future generations. His passing makes people cherish the spiritual wealth he left behind and inspires people to strive hard in their respective fields to contribute to societal development and progress.
