[Saba Sports News] The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is slated to begin in Chennai on March 22, as confirmed by Cricbuzz through multiple IPL officials.
Arun Singh Dhumal, the IPL chairman, stated, “The league will kick off on March 22 in Chennai.” The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as the reigning champions, are set to host the season’s opening ceremony and the first match, although their opponents have not yet been determined. “It has not been finalized yet,” Dhumal said, with CSK’s CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, echoing the uncertainty regarding the opening match’s opposing team.
Dhumal revealed plans to release an initial schedule covering the first 10-12 days soon, with a complete fixture list to be announced after the Election Commission of India publicizes the dates for the upcoming General Election. The election dates, expected to be declared between the second and third weeks of March, will influence the final IPL schedule.
Despite the potential overlap with election activities, Dhumal is optimistic about keeping the tournament within India, suggesting the possibility of expanding beyond the usual 10 venues.
The IPL season is expected to conclude on May 26.
