[Saba Sports News] Recently, Italian media has reported on the composition, salary structure and management system of referees in Italy. It is reported that the mechanism within the referee management system is largely unified. Referees act as observers for the Italian Football Federation. After every match, they review replays of key incidents and compile a report containing evaluations and judgments. Their performance is scored on a scale from 8.70 points (excellent) down to 8.20 points (unsatisfactory). An outstanding rating will almost guarantee a referee officiates again the following weekend, while mistakes or oversights may result in a suspension. It should be noted that referees are paid on a per-match basis, with specific earnings determined by their grade and role. As such, no officiating means no income. It is understood that a referee’s income consists of match appearance fees and an annual fixed salary negotiated with the Italian Football Federation. The salary varies according to the referee’s seniority and whether they hold international referee status.
The editor believes that referees’ remuneration varies according to the number of matches they officiate and their roles. Moreover, their work is not continuous, as injuries or questionable refereeing decisions may prevent them from taking charge of subsequent games.
