[Saba Sports News] The New York Knicks have been blocked from interviewing several currently employed NBA head coaches, but their reported top target might still be a possibility.
Last week, the Knicks submitted a formal request to speak with Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, which the Mavericks denied. However, SNY’s Ian Begley reported Monday that the door hasn’t been completely shut on Kidd potentially leaving Dallas for New York.
According to Begley, sources familiar with the situation say “the door is not completely closed” on Kidd making the move. There have been reports of mutual interest between Kidd and the Knicks, though it’s also possible that Kidd is using the situation as leverage to negotiate a new deal with Dallas.
Kidd has ties to the Knicks organization and their star guard, Jalen Brunson, who played under him in Dallas before signing a major deal with New York. Kidd is also close with longtime NBA trainer Casey Smith, who was controversially phased out by the Mavericks and has since joined the Knicks’ staff.
Adding to the intrigue, Kidd ended his playing career in New York during the 2012-13 season, giving him another layer of familiarity with the franchise. With the Knicks still searching for their next head coach, Kidd remains a name to watch.
