[Saba Sports News] JJ Redick hopes to cultivate a defensive powerhouse in Bronny James, akin to Luguentz Dort of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, the new Los Angeles Lakers head coach discussed rookie guard Bronny James, drawing an intriguing comparison to Dort. Redick emphasized Bronny’s defensive potential, saying, “You have to be a guy that’s a ball hawk at all times. We’re going to develop his shot and ball skills. He’s already got a great feel and instinct on the defensive end.”
Redick recounted a moment from the Canada-USA basketball exhibition game, noting Dort’s defensive impact, which disrupted multiple possessions. “I think Lu Dort just singlehandedly broke up the eighth possession of the game. His ball pressure literally blows up entire plays,” Redick said. “I believe Bronny will eventually be that guy.”
The comparison is fitting, given Dort’s rise as an undrafted player known for his defensive intensity. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Dort’s build is similar to the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Bronny. While Bronny won’t match Dort’s prowess immediately, Dort’s defensive role provides a valuable model for Bronny, whose offensive skills are still developing. This comparison aligns Bronny’s potential path with a focus on defense, much like Dort’s.
