[Saba Sports News] The Golden State Warriors appear to be ending an era with Klay Thompson.
According to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors and Thompson expect to part ways in free agency. The two sides have had minimal communication over the last two weeks, and Thompson is not interested in waiting through the initial wave of free agency to see if the Warriors will reconsider.
Both parties are accepting that their relationship has likely run its course, with Thompson ready to explore other teams. The Warriors are willing to facilitate a sign-and-trade if necessary to maximize Thompson’s earnings elsewhere.
The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Dallas Mavericks are expected to show interest in Thompson. The Lakers are particularly intriguing, as Thompson’s father, Mychal, was a player for the team and is now their radio color commentator. LeBron James has indicated he would structure his next contract to allow the Lakers to add a significant piece. Marc Stein reported that James is “hopeful” the Lakers can outbid the Mavericks for Thompson.
While this situation has been developing for a while, it will still be surprising to see one of the cornerstones of the Warriors’ dynasty playing for another team next season.
