[Saba Sports News] Uncle Drew might be heading back to his roots for the next Olympic Games.
Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving recently spoke with Sam Amick of The Athletic, hinting at an interest in playing for Australia in the 2028 Olympics if he isn’t selected for Team USA.
“I would love to entertain playing for Team Australia,” Irving shared. “I was born in Australia, so it’s not a hard transition. But I don’t want to be let down if there are other opportunities for me.”
Irving, who will be 36 at the time, was born in Melbourne and holds dual U.S.-Australian citizenship. He’s had international success with Team USA, winning Olympic gold in 2016 and FIBA World Cup gold in 2014, though he wasn’t on the roster for the recent Paris Olympics.
He also once considered playing for Australia as a teenager before changing course. To play for Australia, he would need approval from both FIBA and Team USA.
