[Saba Sports News] After a poor start to the 2026 season, McLaren faces its first major test on the road to defending the title. The team fell far behind in the standings after both cars failed to start at the Chinese Grand Prix, but Lando Norris remains confident about fighting for the championship, believing McLaren still has the capability to build a title-winning car.
As last season’s double champions, McLaren were expected to be strong this year, but rule changes have brought huge challenges. This season F1 has shifted the car’s aerodynamics toward chassis-mounted designs and introduced a new power unit system in which electrical and internal-combustion outputs each account for 50%. That change raises higher demands on reliability. McLaren’s problems came to a head at the Chinese Grand Prix. Before the race, Norris’s car was found to have an electrical fault during startup and ultimately could not start. Worse, teammate Oscar Piastri experienced a similar issue, and both cars retired, leaving the team with zero points. Although the two failures were not directly related, the scene still cast doubt on McLaren’s technical stability.
The writer believes the double retirement is a significant blow to the team’s image, especially frustrating because the problems were not entirely controllable. But the writer trusts McLaren has learned from the incident and will do everything possible to prevent a recurrence.
