[Saba Sports News] Magic Johnson shared his thoughts on social media Thursday about the possibility of the Los Angeles Lakers hiring Dan Hurley as their next head coach.
A report on Thursday indicated that the Lakers are interested in Hurley, who has led UConn to consecutive national championships. While nothing is finalized, the Lakers are actively pursuing the Huskies head coach.
Johnson expressed his excitement about the potential hire.
“I heard the great news that Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss and GM/VP of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka have had conversations with back-to-back NCAA champion and current UCONN Head Coach, Dan Hurley, about becoming the next Lakers Head Coach!” Johnson wrote on X.
“I’m so excited and thrilled! This would be a game-changer for the Lakers organization, LeBron, AD, the rest of the Laker players, Laker Nation and the NBA! Coach Hurley can coach his butt off lol.”
LeBron James also seems to support the potential hire. The main question is whether Hurley will leave Storrs, Connecticut, for Los Angeles.
Hurley has previously expressed interest in coaching in the NBA. However, it remains to be seen if he feels now is the right time. His coaching style, which includes rigorous physical conditioning and demanding high effort from players, may or may not translate well to the NBA. Additionally, Hurley could be using this interest as leverage for a pay raise.
Time will tell the outcome, but Johnson would likely be disappointed if a deal doesn’t come through.
