The reported transfer debt—money still owed to other clubs for player transfers—has reached a historic high of £331 million, nearly doubling in just two years. Manchester United is among many clubs that use transfer debt as a financing tool, but this still means the club’s total debt has reached £878 million, and when including the £100 million revolving credit facility added in July, the total debt approaches £1 billion. In this regard, James Ratcliffe is reviewing the sources of every expenditure and exploring every available revenue stream, even seeking legal advice to ensure that once Manchester United is found to have seriously violated Premier League financial regulations next year, the club can seek compensation.
