[Saba Sports News] NBA Summer League MVP winners and legends often make it to their team’s rotation by the season due to their consistent performances.
The Jordi Fernandez-led Brooklyn Nets may have just found a player to help them stay competitive despite Mikal Bridges’ departure. Jalen Wilson lit up the court in Las Vegas, torching opponents and earning the 2024 NBA Summer League Most Valuable Player award, as announced by NBA Communications.
In his second run with the Nets in Las Vegas, Wilson averaged 30 minutes per game and was a prolific scorer throughout their 5-game campaign.
By the end of the Summer League, Wilson averaged 21.8 points per game, shooting 47.3% from all three levels of scoring. His regular-season performance with the Nets also proved valuable, as he hit 55% of his three-point attempts despite taking eight shots from beyond the arc per game.
Wilson’s elite sharpshooting skills are a significant addition to Jordi Fernandez’s Nets, especially after Mikal Bridges’ move to the New York Knicks.
Wilson also contributed defensively, averaging 4.6 rebounds and 0.6 steals per game during the Summer League. Despite his impressive performance, there was some surprise that he was named the Summer League MVP but only made the second team.
During the regular season, Wilson was given opportunities by Jacque Vaughn, playing in 43 games and starting in three as the team began their rebuild. In an average of 15.5 minutes of playing time, he demonstrated his scoring efficiency and potential as an all-around player for the Nets.
Wilson’s shooting percentage was 42.5% from all three levels, but he only averaged 4.98 points per game. His three-point shooting during the 2023-24 regular season was less consistent, with a 32.4% success rate. However, his rebounding remained solid, averaging 3.05 rebounds per game over the 82-game season.
Overall, Cam Thomas might face some competition for the role of primary shotmaker in Jordi Fernandez’s Nets roster.
