[Saba Sports News] Japanese badminton star Misaki Matsutomo recently discussed the topic of her teammate Ayaka Takahashi’s retirement during a media interview. Matsutomo expressed her regret, as she had partnered with Takahashi for over 10 years, and they shared a great synergy, winning numerous awards together. Matsutomo stated, “I do feel lonely because we’ve been together for so long. I have this feeling more than anyone else. Without her, I wouldn’t have many of the experiences I do, so I am only grateful to her.” Ayaka Takahashi officially retired in August 2020, ending her 24-year badminton career. The reasons for her retirement included aging, reduced competitiveness due to foot injuries, and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics. These factors together led her to the decision to retire. During their partnership, the duo achieved many honors, including the women’s doubles gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 Badminton Asia Championships. These accomplishments not only brought personal honor to them but also contributed significantly to the development of Japanese women’s doubles badminton.
