[Saba Sports News] Earlier this week, the FIA made a controversial decision to extend the second free practice session of this year’s Mexican Grand Prix from the usual 60 minutes to 90 minutes. Typically, F1 free practice sessions follow a fixed schedule designed to provide teams with ample preparation time while maintaining a compact and fair event rhythm. However, the FIA seems intent on breaking convention by increasing the practice time, undoubtedly providing drivers with more testing opportunities. In my view, the decision to extend practice time is partly to give drivers more time to familiarize themselves with the unique challenges of the Mexican track, including its high altitude, complex corners, and special requirements for vehicle performance. On the other hand, this innovative measure also reflects the FIA’s ongoing pursuit of enhancing event quality and audience experience. By giving drivers more practical opportunities, it can not only improve the race’s performances but also reduce the likelihood of unexpected accidents to some extent, ensuring race safety.
