[Saba Sports News] On the afternoon of January 19, Li Qiang, a member of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and Premier of the State Council, chaired a discussion with experts, entrepreneurs, and representatives from fields such as education, health, and sports to gather opinions and suggestions on the drafts of the “Government Work Report” and the “14th Five-Year Plan Outline.”
As the only representative from the sports world born in the 1990s, Shi Yuqi, an athlete from the Chinese national badminton team and world champion, spoke at the meeting. He shared his insights and suggestions on economic and social development for this year and the “14th Five-Year” period, drawing from his experience in sports.
Shi Yuqi’s athletic career is a model of inspiration: in 2014, he won the men’s singles badminton championship at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, marking his entry onto the international stage; in 2018, he defeated Lin Dan in the finals of the All England Badminton Championships, becoming the fourth Chinese player to achieve this honor in ten years; in the same year, he also triumphed over Kento Momota, the then-world number one, at the BWF Year-End Finals, claiming the year-end title.
Despite experiencing injuries and fluctuations in form, Shi Yuqi has always remained dedicated to his sport. Last month, at the BWF World Tour Finals held in Hangzhou for 2025, he was awarded both the Annual Best Male Athlete and the Most Popular Male Athlete awards, and he was selected as one of the “Top Ten Athletes of China” for 2025 by the Sports Department of Xinhua News Agency.
Through his journey, Shi Yuqi has exemplified the sporting spirit that “the power of perseverance can take one higher and further.” In response, fans remarked that Shi Yuqi has become the man who has made the leap from CCTV Sports Channel to CCTV News Broadcast.
