[Saba Sports News] The Malaysian team performed poorly in the recently concluded Asian Badminton Mixed Team Championships, losing 2-3 to Hong Kong and Indonesia in the group stage, marking the first time in history they failed to advance from the group stage. This means that the Malaysian team could not qualify directly for the Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team Championships scheduled from April 27 to May 4 and must rely on their world ranking to secure a spot, disappointing fans. While some media believe the backup players should not be overly criticized, the dismal results raised two key questions: Are the players too complacent? Why hasn’t hiring high-paid foreign coaches improved overall performance? Yesterday, Datuk V. Subramaniam, President of the Malaysian Badminton Association, expressed his disappointment in an interview and revealed that he would seek an explanation in a meeting with the Malaysian national badminton team coaches this week. Subramaniam stated that if we are a country that struggles to cultivate top badminton talent, then such results would be acceptable, but that is not the case. Former national team players who left the association for independent careers have achieved better results, with Lee Zii Jia being a prime example, having won the bronze medal in men’s singles badminton at the Paris Olympics. In the Malaysian Badminton Association, players enjoy everything—training facilities, salaries, logistical support, competition expenses, allowances, equipment, and sponsorship—but the results are unsatisfactory, which is unacceptable. After the losses, some media even reported that players were seen laughing and chatting without displaying any fighting spirit, leading the Malaysian Badminton Association to question the coaching team and players.
