[Saba Sports News] Victor Wembanyama made history by being named to the All-Defensive First Team, becoming the first rookie to achieve this honor and the youngest ever to do so. This milestone caps off what many consider the greatest defensive season for a rookie in NBA history.
Before Wembanyama, five rookies had made the All-Defensive Second Team, including legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Manute Bol. He continues the tradition of Spurs’ No. 1 picks earning defensive honors, following David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks per game, leading the league in blocks and establishing himself as a defensive powerhouse. Despite his standout performance, Rudy Gobert won his fourth Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award, tying Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the most in NBA history. Wembanyama finished as runner-up and has the potential to surpass the all-time DPOY win record within his first decade in the NBA.
The 2023-24 All-Defensive Teams reflect the new positionless rules, resulting in a unique composition. The First Team includes Rudy Gobert, Victor Wembanyama, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, and Herb Jones. The Second Team features Alex Caruso, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Jaden McDaniels, and Jalen Suggs. The First Team notably consists of four centers, a departure from the traditional format.
