[Saba Sports News] The Orlando Magic are pushing forward on their path to consistent playoff contention, securing Wendell Carter Jr. for the long term with a three-year, $59 million extension, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Carter, who had two years left on his previous deal, now has a total contract worth $82 million through the 2027-28 season, keeping the 25-year-old center in Orlando until his age-29 season.
There’s some concern after Carter rolled his ankle in the Magic’s recent preseason loss to the Pelicans, but his health has been an ongoing challenge; he’s missed an average of 24 games over the last three seasons.
Despite the injury risk, this long-term deal locks down a key piece for the Magic, as Carter’s skill set—particularly his floor spacing (37.4% from three last season)—is an ideal complement to forward Paolo Banchero.
With depth at center, the Magic have options if Carter needs time to recover. Moe Wagner and Goga Bitadze bring different strengths off the bench, while Jonathan Isaac or Banchero can fill in at center when needed.
Carter, Wagner, and Bitadze each bring unique dimensions to the lineup, giving the Magic a versatile frontcourt that aligns well with their vision for a skilled, size-oriented roster.
