[Saba Sports News] After completing his freshman year at USC, Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James, has decided to keep his options wide open. He announced on Friday his decision to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft, all while retaining his college eligibility. Furthermore, Bronny is exploring a potential college transfer, a move hinted at in recent reports.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Bronny expressed gratitude towards USC for the invaluable experiences gained during his freshman year, despite its challenges. “This past year has been full of both highs and lows, contributing significantly to my growth as an individual, a student, and an athlete. I’ve chosen to declare for the NBA Draft but will maintain my college eligibility, and I will also be entering the NCAA transfer portal,” James stated. He extended thanks to USC for a memorable first year and showed appreciation for the support from his family, friends, medical team, and fans.
Last summer, James faced a severe health scare with a cardiac arrest, followed by heart surgery. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 19-year-old must pass an evaluation by the NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel to participate in team workouts, the Draft Combine in May, or to be drafted.
James has until June 16 to finalize his decision on staying in the draft. He is permitted to engage in workouts and interviews with teams until then. If he opts to continue his college career, it appears he will not return to USC, especially after the Trojans welcomed Eric Musselman as their new head coach, replacing Andy Enfield, who departed for SMU.
Bronny, who is making a comeback from his heart condition, averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 25 games in his season with USC, playing 19.4 minutes per game.
