The ATP Finals, formerly known as the Tennis Masters Cup, is a tennis tournament held at the end of each year between the top eight players in the men’s ATP Champion Race. But under the rules of the Masters Cup, a player ranked eighth in the ATP championship does not necessarily qualify for the tournament. If a player is a winner of one of the four majors of the year and is ranked within the top 20 (but outside the eighth ranking), he/she can replace the eighth ranked player in the Masters Cup, but if more than one player meets the above criteria, the winner of the higher ranking is preferred.
