[Saba Sports News] The Mavericks are hopeful this series will mirror their 2011 triumph against the Heat. For the Mavericks to secure the Larry O’Brien trophy, Luka Doncic will need to be at his absolute best.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reflected on his experience with Dirk Nowitzki, admitting in an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated that he didn’t fully appreciate Dirk’s greatness during his prime. However, he vowed not to make the same mistake with Luka Doncic, also praising the Mavericks’ franchise and players for their heart and determination.
“The nonstop brilliance of Luka. I don’t think I fully appreciated watching Dirk. I’m not going to make that mistake again. And, of course, the Mavs as a team, I love our heart. Our determination. Our character.”
Cuban holds great respect for Nowitzki, who is the biggest legend in Mavericks history, having led the team to their only NBA championship in 2011, defeating the Heat’s big three. Dirk was sensational in that series, averaging 26.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, earning the Finals MVP for his performances.
Currently, Luka Doncic is trying to replicate Dirk’s achievement as the Mavericks face the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Like Dirk’s team, Luka and the Mavs are the underdogs and have fallen 1-0 in the series.
