[Saba Sports News] As Jimmy Butler’s suspension with the Miami Heat nears its end, his potential destinations outside of Miami appear to be shrinking.
Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein revealed on Sunday via Substack that the Brooklyn Nets, once rumored as a suitor for Butler, have no plans to pursue him in free agency this offseason. Stein added that the Nets are also “not locked into the idea” of trading for a superstar this summer.
This development significantly impacts Butler’s leverage in his push for a trade before the Feb. 6 deadline. Butler has reportedly shown interest in playing for Brooklyn, one of the few teams capable of extending him a max contract.
With the Nets now seemingly out of the mix, the Heat lose the immediate threat of Butler leaving in free agency without compensation.
This shift allows Miami to hold firm, avoiding a rushed trade for subpar returns. Instead, they can keep Butler through the offseason, hoping he picks up his $52.4 million player option.
This would open the door for a more favorable sign-and-trade scenario, giving the Heat a better chance to secure valuable assets.
While Butler could upend these plans by taking a discounted deal in free agency to leave Miami, such a move seems unlikely. At 35 years old, financial considerations remain a central factor, especially given reports that money played a key role in the strain between Butler and the Heat.
For now, Miami appears to have more time to navigate the Butler situation, with fewer external pressures to make a hasty decision.
