[Saba Sports News] With the Philadelphia Eagles back in the Super Bowl, owner Jeffrey Lurie might be eyeing a new challenge.
On his podcast this week, Bill Simmons of The Ringer reported that Lurie has emerged as a finalist in the race to purchase the NBA’s Boston Celtics.
According to Simmons, the team recently narrowed down its list of prospective buyers, and Lurie is among the final four or five contenders.
“The Celtics cut down their list of prospective buyers to four or five people,” said Simmons, per WEEI in Boston. “One of those people is Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, who’s apparently from Massachusetts.”
Simmons also pointed out that it’s not uncommon for NFL owners to hold stakes in NBA teams, referencing Stan Kroenke (Los Angeles Rams and Denver Nuggets) and Josh Harris (Washington Commanders and Philadelphia 76ers).
Lurie, 73, has owned the Eagles since 1994, overseeing four Super Bowl appearances (including this year) and one championship victory.
A Boston native with deep ties to the city, Lurie attended Clark University, Boston University, and Brandeis University.
The Celtics, 18-time NBA champions and the reigning titleholders, were put up for sale by longtime owner Wyc Grousbeck last year.
With several high-profile contenders reportedly bowing out, Lurie—whose estimated net worth exceeds $5 billion—could be in prime position to acquire the iconic franchise.
