[Saba Sports News] The New York Knicks recently secured their spot in the Eastern Conference Finals with a dominant Game 6 victory over the Boston Celtics at home. Karl-Anthony Towns played a key role in the closeout win, setting up a high-stakes matchup with the Indiana Pacers for a trip to the NBA Finals.
Over the weekend, Towns made headlines off the court when he was shown on the jumbotron during the Yankees vs. Mets game — wearing a shirt that featured none other than viral Knicks superfan Jason Dantona.
The image on the shirt came from a widely shared clip from the Sidetalk YouTube series, where Dantona delivered a profanity-filled rant against Boston outside Madison Square Garden before breaking into a celebratory dance.
Upon seeing Towns wear the shirt, Dantona was stunned.
“I thought they were messing with me,” he told TMZ. “I knew the shirt had dropped a couple weeks ago, even before we knew we’d be playing the Celtics, but I didn’t think any players would actually wear it.”
He added that the moment only felt real once it started gaining traction online.
“Didn’t believe it at first, but then social media kind of went crazy with it, and I saw posts from the Yankees and even MLB — it was a really cool moment,” Dantona said.
The Knicks now face a familiar foe in the Pacers — the team that eliminated them in seven games during last year’s second round. That series ended with New York decimated by injuries, but this time, hopes are high for a different result.
“This year looks like we’re healthy, Lord willing,” Dantona added. “So I think we’re going to be taking them out in six games.”
Game 1 of the Knicks-Pacers series tips off Wednesday night at 8:00 PM ET from Madison Square Garden and will be nationally televised on TNT.
