“On media Day, my friends and I would drive to the arena and play music,” Kuminga recalls. When I opened Instagram, the first picture that popped up was about Mutombo’s death, and I immediately turned off the music, and we kept quiet and didn’t talk for a while.”
He continued: “I kept thinking, ‘Why? What’s going on here? ‘This is really bad news and very sad. I knew he was sick, I texted him a few months ago, but I didn’t know he was that sick.”
“I knew Mutombo before I knew Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and other great players, and my father always talked about him,” Kuminga said. He built a big hospital in our hometown and helped a lot of people in need.”
Finally, Kuminga recalls, “The last time I saw Mutombo, he said to me, ‘Keep going, you’ll have a great future, always remember where you came from. ‘”
