World Cup: France vs Sweden
Kickoff Time: 2026-07-1 5:00 (HKT)
France won all three of their group stage matches and advanced to the knockout round as the top-placed team in their group with an impressive run. Les Bleus deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation. Mike Maignan mans the goal, while Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé, William Saliba and Theo Hernández form the defensive backline as the team’s last line of defence. The double pivot of Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot provides a formidable defensive shield in central midfield thanks to their elite ball-winning ability. They are capable of cutting off long-ball counter-attacks originating from the opposition’s backline, and can quickly spread play wide once they regain possession to launch forward surges. On the flanks, Michael Olise and Désiré Doué combine blistering pace, intelligent inside cuts and accurate crossing, giving them multiple ways to carve open opposing defences. Within this system, Ousmane Dembélé operates primarily as an attacking midfielder, bringing composure on the ball, build-up play and creative vision to the side. Captain Kylian Mbappé leads the line as the central striker, tasked primarily with converting chances into goals. So far in this World Cup, Mbappé has scored four goals and registered two assists.
Sweden posted one win, one draw and one loss in the group stage, scraping through to the knockout round in third place. Managed by Graham Potter, Sweden adopt a counter-attacking style of play. Out of possession, the whole team drops back to form a compact defensive block to shut down central through balls, only allowing opponents opportunities from long-range shots. In attack, Sweden rely heavily on their front two of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres. Defensive players hit long vertical passes straight to the strike pair, who then use their individual quality to break down rival defences. However, Sweden’s attacking game is overly reliant on long-ball transitions and individual brilliance from their forwards. If the opposition manages to cut passing lanes at the back, Sweden’s entire attack grinds to a halt. Additionally, Sweden’s midfield lacks creative outlets, leaving them short of goals when forced into sustained possession play. As a result, they must lean on set pieces and corners to generate dangerous goal-scoring opportunities. It is also worth noting that while Sweden’s three centre-backs boast a height advantage, they are generally slow when recovering ground. Against teams with rapid wide runners, their defensive unit is consistently stretched and out of position.
There is a clear gulf in overall quality between the two sides, with France holding a decisive edge across defence, midfield and attack. Furthermore, France’s potent wide threats are expected to overwhelm Sweden’s slow, cumbersome back three. All factors considered, Sweden are unlikely to stand up to France’s superior overall strength.
