The 2025 Korea Masters will be held from November 4th to November 9th in Iksan, South Korea, with a total prize pool of US$240,000. As a lower-level Super 300 event, while many top players have chosen to rest, numerous emerging badminton stars and highly promising young players are participating in this tournament.
In men’s singles, Singapore’s top player Jia Heng Jason TEH is the top seed for this tournament and will headline the top half of the draw. In the first round, TEH will face India’s young talent S. Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian. Given his skill and experience, he should navigate this match comfortably. TEH embodies the typical characteristics of Southeast Asian badminton players, boasting excellent technical skills. His net play is delicate, with varied pauses and changes, allowing him to create attacking opportunities through his technique. Additionally, his rear court attacks, particularly his jumping smashes, are highly threatening and well-connected. Once he finds an opening, he can mount effective offensive sequences. He shows courage on crucial points, hinting at a potential “clutch” mentality. However, TEH’s defensive abilities are relatively average, and his physical stamina is a weakness that makes it difficult for him to break into the super-elite tier. His playing style suits fast-paced, attack-dominated matches; he needs to avoid protracted, draining battles to best utilize his net play and attacking technical advantages.
In the bottom half of the draw, World Championships dark horse Victor LAI is the tournament’s second seed. He will face Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Panarin in the first round. At this year’s World Championships, LAI made a surprise run to the semifinals. In his match against world number one Shi Yuqi, he managed to cause significant trouble. LAI is a player whose game is based on technique and a defensive counter-attacking style. He possesses solid net skills, produces shots of good quality, and is flexible and varied. He also has excellent mobility and coordination. While his raw power and explosiveness are somewhat lacking, he compensates with strong attacking continuity. However, LAI’s tactical approach can be somewhat one-dimensional. Although he has some ability to adapt, his execution often lacks decisiveness when trailing, and his mentality is prone to crumbling when opponents mount comebacks.
This Korea Masters is truly a showcase for the younger generation. While it lacks some top-tier stars, the matches featuring these young players are always highly anticipated. These talented youngsters will pour their passion and sweat onto the court competing for the championship crown. The “Rising Stars” of badminton are likely among them right now – let’s look forward to their exciting performances
