[Saba Sports News] Former NBA superstar and eight-time All-Star Dwight Howard recently opened up about his personal struggles and regrets on his podcast, Above the Rim with DH 12.
In an emotional and candid moment, Howard reflected on his shortcomings, particularly in his family life, admitting he hasn’t been the role model he once aspired to be. His vulnerability revealed a side of him rarely seen by fans, as he took accountability for the decisions he made in his younger years.
“I don’t regret my kids, but I do regret how I went about having them,” Howard shared. “I have five kids by five women. That’s not the example I want to set for my daughters or my sons. It’s not about having kids being bad, but it’s about the way I handled things—sharing my body and energy with multiple people and giving these women false hopes for a future. Looking back, I wish I had done things differently.”
Howard acknowledged how his lack of maturity and guidance as a young man led to choices he now wishes he could undo.
“I was misguided. I didn’t understand the consequences of my actions. Now, as an older man, I see the heartbreak it caused—not just for me but for the women and kids involved. Even if some of them had their own agendas, it’s painful for everyone to have a child with someone and not be together as a family.”
This honesty marks a shift in Howard’s public persona, moving from the dominant basketball figure to a man reflecting on the complexities of fame, family, and fatherhood.
His transparency about co-parenting struggles and fractured relationships highlights the challenges he has faced off the court, which often drew as much media attention as his athletic achievements.
Howard is a proud father to his five children—Braylon, Layla, David, Dwight III (Trey), and Jade. However, his relationships with their mothers have often been a source of controversy.
Some of these relationships, including his tumultuous one with Royce Reed, mother of his son Braylon, have played out publicly in court battles and custody disputes. Despite these challenges, Howard has remained vocal about his love for his children.
Other relationships have been less public. Christine Vest, a singer and former athlete, shares a son, Dwight III (Trey), with Howard. Tiffany Render, a model who has kept a low profile, is the mother of one of his daughters.
Melissa Rios, the mother of Howard’s son David, tragically passed away in 2020 due to complications from an epileptic seizure, a loss Howard has publicly mourned. Lastly, fitness model Hope Alexa is reported to be the mother of another of Howard’s daughters, though she, too, has avoided the media spotlight.
As Howard navigates life after basketball, he hopes to use his experiences to inspire others. His reflections on accountability, growth, and the importance of making better choices underscore his desire to set a better example for his children and fans alike.
While he cannot rewrite his past, Howard’s openness about his regrets and lessons learned marks a step forward in becoming the man he strives to be—a better father, a better role model, and a better person.
