[Saba Sports News] Now just four wins away from an NBA title, head coach Mark Daigneault and the Oklahoma City Thunder have reached the Finals for the first time in 13 years — and they did it without ever setting expectations.
Throughout the 2024-25 campaign, Daigneault led the Thunder with a deliberate, grounded mindset: focus only on what’s directly ahead — each play, quarter, half, and game — without projecting forward or chasing benchmarks.
Speaking at his first media availability since the Thunder clinched the Western Conference Finals, Daigneault emphasized the team’s steady approach.
“I try not to operate with any expectations,” he said. “Just do my best every day, help everyone else do their best every day, and be at peace with wherever that takes us. What we’ve learned is that when you stick to that process and repeat it, it can take you to great places — and this is one of them.”
For Daigneault, what makes the journey meaningful is the group itself.
“It starts with the players,” he continued. “These guys have unbelievable character and come from amazing backgrounds. They bring a real, genuine energy into the gym every day, and that builds momentum. It’s just a joy to be around.”
Reflecting on his speech during the Western Conference trophy ceremony, Daigneault doubled down on his appreciation for this team.
“I meant every word I said,” he added. “This is a huge opportunity for us, but I don’t want the season to end. I just want to keep coaching this team because they make every day so enjoyable. I think everyone involved feels that way. The energy in our gym stays consistent — win or lose.”
On national TV, Daigneault offered a memorable summary of his squad, calling them “idiots” — in the most affectionate way possible.
“These guys are uncommon. They do everything right. They’re high-character, they’re idiots, they’re competitive, and above all, they’re team-first. They embody everything it means to be a team.”
The Thunder will host Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 5.
